My New Project

If you ever ask my good friend, Lis (simpleartsplanet.com) what presents to get me, she will most probably suggest bags! Yes, I love bags; big, medium, small, any size, any makes, you name it and I will have a use for it. My husband even suggested I should make bags instead of jewellery! Having said that, I don't really own many bags (seriously, I don't!).

Anyway, after 4 years of waiting, I bought my second sewing machine recently. I used to make small card /cheque book holders to sell at the Farmers Market in US and had fun sewing them. This time round, I am more ambitious and want to make bigger bags. I scouted through Etsy and came across a talented seller selling patterns.

Here is my finished clutch, using pattern from sewingwithme3. I modified the specifications a little and added my own touch of beads! I bead embroidered on the flower print and added a beaded ring. The finished clutch is very roomy and can hold my long wallet, phone, keys, etc.

With the success of this clutch, I bought more designer fabrics to embark on more clutches and other projects!

Turquoise Long Necklace

By now, you would have guessed I simply LOVE turquoise and would work with anything turquoise. This long necklace is another of my creations using Turquoise Picasso seed beads, Turquoise glass rondelles, combined with metal beads and Butterscotch (sounds yummy, and the beads do look fantastic) rondelles. It was stitched in a combination of Herringbone and Spiral Rope techniques.

Due to the natural look of these seed beads, the necklace looks very organic and is a fun accessory to wear with casual outfits.

This is the new colourway for Bollywood Cuff, in Antique Metallic Bronze. The dark tone complements beautifully with earth tone outfits.

For those who have completed this project before may notice that the clasp used in this bracelet is different from previous (Swarovski button). I have made two peyote stitched tubes and on the other end, two columns of squares are left blank for the clasp to go through. This gives the wearer the flexibility to choose a suitable length.

Green Opal Necklace

This necklace was done with Tubular Netting, and luxuriously embellished with Green Opal glass beads and seed beads. I mixed up the topaz beige and supra gold seed beads in the stitches which in turn give a unique look to the piece. A twist in this project was making a double clasp for the necklace.

I recently borrowed and renewed twice on Margie Deeb's 'The Beader's Guide to Color' from the library. I thought it is an awesome book and would like to share with fellow beaders if you have not come across. Here's an excerpt from Amazon on the book description.

My "First" Jewellery

This is the first piece of jewellery I have completed since arriving in Perth. It is created with Peyote stitched rings with Swarovski crystal cosmic rings. I bought these cosmic rings on impulse and didn't know what to do with them afterwards. Since I am a "chunky jewellery" fanatic, I decided to turn it into a chained bracelet.

My "Last" Jewellery

Happy New Year Everyone!

My beads are finally categorised and packed nicely into boxes, and ready for the movers come next week. Before I bid my goodbye, I would like to present my "last" piece of jewellery completed recently.

The design concept for this bracelet is not my original idea. There was a slight modification from one of Rachel Nelson's Seed Bead Fusion (book) projects. The technique used is similar but I changed the configuration of the pattern and turned it into a bracelet. I had also used a snap button for the closure so that when the two ends meet, the slinky bracelet looks seamless.

I really like the chunkiness of the bracelet and already thought of a few variations that can be applied to change its look. But this shall wait.

With this piece, I would like to thank you for the support and appreciation of Beady Girl. I look forward to my new beading adventure in Australia.

"Closer" Necklace

In 2004 'Closer' film, Julia Roberts wore a necklace at the gallery scene. My husband pointed it out to me that I should make a similar necklace to sell. While it was easy to imitate, it was not exactly easy to find the right materials. I created an inspired one using red horn beads with black-lip shell leaves, and sold it at the Redwood City Farmers' Market then.

Recently (6 years later), while clearing up my stuff, I came across the poster with the photo of Julia Roberts wearing the necklace. I started to have thoughts of recreating the necklace. I looked through my pile of beads and came up with Swarovski Coral pearls with some bronze metallic leaves. The completed necklace has almost similar colourways as JR's necklace but still doesn't look close. I am not completely satisfied with it and shall continue my quest to look for the perfect beads!

3-tier Necklaces

I love to wear long necklaces whenever I can. I like the way it dresses up my outfit instantly while my baby used to hold on to it like a "lifeline"! I was at The Shophouse Fair last November and saw a vendor selling beaded jewellery from Indonesia. I spotted this 3-tier black pearls necklace strung with metallic silver string. It is very simply made but makes a huge statement. Costing only S$15, I bought the necklace.

With the inspiration from this necklace, I used Spiral Rope technique to create the bone of the necklace and attached 3 layers (6 strings in total) of seed beads and 4mm, 6mm beads. The Turquoise Silver was created with opaque turquoise and picasso turquoise rondelles while the Golden Emerald was a luxurious spread of Swarovski round crystals. The formulations of the two necklaces are slightly different.

The variations to the design are endless and different beads give you different looks. The Turquoise Silver is more for smart casual because of its picasso finish while the Swarovski crystals give a more glamourous effect on the outfit. I will be trying other beads/colour combinations when I get a chance!

Seasons Greetings!

The idea to create this "Tiffany" inspired bracelet came after I watched the Tiffany & Co's romantic holiday commercial. It was stitched with the Right Angle Weave, using 6x4mm Opaque Turquoise rondelles, Swarovski crystal chatons in 4-hole setting, Size 15 seed beads and a rectangular Swarovski crystal button.

There is nothing fanciful about the stitch, just the good old RAW technique. The only difference is to incorporate the chatons and Size 15 seed beads as you weave the rondelles together. Rondelles, when stiched in a RAW form tend to show the connecting thread, so stitching with the seed bead helps to conceal the thread. The most challenging part has to be weaving with the chatons because the needle goes through the holes from side to side. If you encounter one (many you will find) with uneven holes, you may either have to forsake the chaton or unravel your work and start again because it could be up to the last hole where it simply refuses to accomodate the bulk of the the threads (Fireline 4lbs)! And yes, prepare lots of needles. I broke countless along the way.

This RAW bracelet probably took me the longest time I have ever worked on a single project! If you like to try the project, do hand-pick the good chatons first and this would cost you less frustration.

Back to Basics

When I first took up jewellery making, it was basic stringing that I learnt from Tanja Sadow (of JDMIS). It was also the class that got me hooked onto jewellery making.

So, on this lazy afternoon where my boys are napping and I have "nothing better to do", I decided to string up a necklace!

This necklace measures about 15.5" long when worn and comprises of ceramic beads in turquoise (with raku finish) and red glass rondelles.

I know I am boring, always working with turquoise and red but that's my colour! :) The best part of this project is that it took me only 10 mins to complete!

Bling, Bling, Bling!

I find the most daunting part about beading is to decide the colour palette for my beadwork. I always believe less is more so my palette is usually monochromatic. The chance to experiment with more colours came when Helena (of manek-manek.com) recommended me a specially coated Swarovski crystal rivoli. This dazzling 27mm Peacock rivoli was specially coated (not by Swarovski) with peacock eyes design. With such a charismatic piece, I decided to go all out to complement with “peacock” coloured beads (6 colours in total).

I used Peyote Stitch to create a bezel for the rivoli, alternating with 4 different colours of seed beads. As for the fringes, the technique was taught by Rachel Nelson when I took her class in US. I completed the necklace with a herringbone chain, stitched with Size 15 Metallic Gold Hex (for the sparkle) seed beads. I didn’t want the chain to over-shadow the centrepiece, so having a slim chain is more appropriate. However, stitching an entire chain with Size 15 beads sure took me a long time!

The completed necklace may look glam but it is appropriate for both smart casual and formal wear. If you pair it with a plain white shirt & jeans, it would brighten up your outfit instantly. For a formal look, you can wear it with a little black dress and the accessory just speaks for itself.

New Project Kit - Pearly Intricate Links

There are many ways to create circular rings using Peyote Stitch. Our new Pearly Intricate Links bracelet is my latest addition to my Links fanaticism. While it looks very similar to my previous Intricate Links, the formulation for these circular rings is different. Here is a rundown on the differences.

Pearly Links take lesser time to create and the formulae of beads is less confusing than the Original Links. You can embellish the edges of Pearly Links luxuriously with Swarovski Crystal Pearls or 3mm beads. For an economical alternative, Size 8 seed beads work as well. This new formulation also enables you to create oval rings but yields a different effect from its predecessor.

On the other hand, the structure of Pearly Links’ rings are flatter than the original links’ because they have not been expanded as much.

The photo shown above is the main project inside the manual where the rings are built in gradual sizes, using Toho Gilded Turquoise seed beads and Swarovski Crystal Pearls. Other design variations will also be discussed.

New Project - Green Agate

This was a long overdue cuff which I completed recently. It was meant for my last Embroidered Cuff class but I didn't complete the finishings then.

The focal centerpiece is a Green Agate cabochon, very nicely carved with patterns on it. To be honest, when I first bought the cabochon, I wasn't exactly thrilled with the look of it and kept it in the cupboard for a long while. I found some leftover Aventurine cabochons and thought they complement each other nicely, hence the creation of this cuff.

I like the way it turned out so I am keeping it for myself!

A Collaboration

Izel's Sun-Drop Pendant first caught my fancy when it was launched as a class project. I finally got around to order one from the master recently. The green stone (oops, sorry Izel, I forgot the stone's name) was intricately wired around and embellished with Swarovski crystal pearls.

Next, I had to decide which beading stitch to go with the pendant. I didn't want the chain to be too loud as the focus should be on the pendant so I thought of all the stitches I know and finally settled on St Petersburg stitch. I used the TOHO permanent galvanised silver and olive green seed beads to do the beading.

The photograph on the right was taken by the expert, Mr Cliff Lim, at the photography workshop.

Glamour

This was made specially for an Australian client who spotted the necklace at my online gallery. Named "Glamour", half of the necklace is made up of embroidered onyx cabochons while the other half is strung with onyx coin beads and Swarovski Crystal pearls.

Although it looks similar to my earlier piece done three years ago, this "Glamour" necklace has its own unique characteristics. For example, I have included more black seed beads on the embroidery part to complement the black onyx cabochons. And since it was a custom order, the length and choice of materials were also discussed with the client. Similar but yet different.

Thank you Danielle, for giving me the chance to remake this necklace again. It certainly brings back alot of memories when I did the first piece. :)

I always use my husband's hand-me-down cameras for my photography work. When the last one broke down unexpectedly, he bought me a new one. So, for once it is MINE and I know I have to "dress" it up with a nice case. I immediately thought of engaging Winniel of The Laughing House to customise the camera case for me. To date, I have 5 pouches from her and I simply love her works.

The case arrived today and it was just perfect!

Russian Rondelles

One of our students asked about using the newly launched rondelles with the Russian Spiral technique. Yes, it can be done. Here is a small section, stitched with the 6 x 4mm rondelles with 3mm Swarovski crsytal pearls. For 1.5" section, I used 33 rondelles and 66 pearls/beads. Thus, for 17" length (it will shrink to 16" due to the bulkiness of the cord), you will need about 380 rondelles and 750 units of pearls/beads.

From my experience, Size 8/0 seed beads (which is almost equivalent to 3mm beads) are not suitable when working with rondelles. This is because the rondelles are wide and flat, so you need the round beads to fill in the gaps nicely. You do not have to use crystal pearls, any round beads are fine.

For light coloured beads, you may like to use the crystal white Fireline or Nymo thread as bits of threads can be seen.

Beady Party I - Simply Red

One of the dress code requirements for the forthcoming Beady Party is to wear own beaded jewellery. Being the host, I have to come up with something which my students have not seen it before. I decided to bead crochet with rondelles.

These "fat and short" rondelles almost drove me crazy when I first started the beginning rows. They don't sit nicely as they should and I was using one coloured 6mm by 4mm beads, which made it even more challenging. After trying a few times with the conventional method, I decided to switch to the jig from Studio Dax. The jig really helped alot in lining up the beads but I still didn't manage to do a decent row. Then I realised I have used the wrong crochet needle! For larger beads, the needle should be switched to a larger size and for this project I used a 1.65mm (1.5mm would have worked as well).

With the beginning rows all crochet properly, the rest was actually quite a breeze after that. My next problem was trying to find the right sized beadcaps to hide the two ends and after searching around in vain, I asked Belinda of BelLee Beadz if she happens to have any beadcaps of the large sizes. She did! She was very kind to pass on her bead cones which she bought from overseas to me! This necklace would not have been completed without her bead cones! Thank you very much, Belinda!

The rondelles are deep red and faceted throughout. The facets in these glass beads are really well-cut which make them look almost like Swarovski crystal rondelles. The photo does not do justice to the actual piece which looks really sparkling.

So, now that I have the necklace, I have to go search for an outfit!

Endless Herringbone Necklace

I love long necklaces but not exactly a big fan making them. Newly added to my necklace collection is this "Endless Herringbone", stitched with Tubular Herringbone Stitch. The beads used in this necklace are Raku finished porcelain beads in red and turquoise, chalk turquoise gemstones and metallic gold seed beads. There is no clasp involved and every bead is securely stitched together.

This project will be available as project kits very soon and there will be other materials to choose from. For those who are interested to learn the Herringbone stitch, I have a class (my last class) on 12 September. Read details here.

RELOCATION

Russian Spiral

I made this necklace specially for my mentor's wife. It was stitched using the Russian Spiral technique. This technique may look complicated but it is deceptively easy to stitch as compared to other beading stitches. It allows you to make use of different sized beads to create a beautiful rope in no time.

For this piece, I have chosen the Picasso Firepolished glass beads and seed beads in Turquoise. The Picasso finish on the beads gives it a very natural, earthy look.

This technique will be taught at my forthcoming Beady Party. Do check out the details!

Using the same Russian Spiral technique, I made this long, endless opera necklace for a customer. It was stitched with Supra Gold and Bright Gold seed beads throughout. The combination of the matte and bright gold blends together very well and doesn't overpower you with the gold.

After stitching the necklace, I like it myself and was actually hoping the customer may decide not to take it. Hopefully, I will be motivated to stitch this 48" long necklace!

Newly added to the Intricate Oval Links project kits is the "Sapphire Mix" coloured seed beads. This is a cool combination of TOHO Permanent Finish Sapphire Opal Silverlined with the normal TOHO Sapphire Silverlined Matte. The finished chain bracelet is suitable for a smart casual wear with jeans as the blue colour tones would complement the jeans blue colour nicely.

Bead Crochet Sequel

We had our first Bead Crochet class on 18 July and 8 ladies attended the session. Of all, 2 have done conventional bead crochet before while others are totally new to the technique.

I believe most felt apprenhensive with the jig at first but the clear instructions from the manual guided them along. Phyllis and Cheng Hong who have done conventional bead crochet before felt that the jig really helps alot in stabilizing the beginning rows. When they were using the conventional method, they had to undo several times before they got the rows of beads to sit nicely. While not all were totally comfortable with the jig, most of them were able to create a small section of the crochet rope by the end of the session.

Phyllis also tried using the Size 11 beads on the jig and felt that it was so much easier than the conventional method. Another student, Kelly, is currently croceting with Delica seed beads on the jig and agrees that it is less confusing wtih the smaller sized beads. Kelly has a great suggestion on picking up loose beads with the flexible needle. She threads part of the flexible needle (strung with crochet thread) to the #12 beading needle and uses the sturdiness of the latter to pick up the beads, and slowly transfer onto the crochet thread. Alternativelly, if you can get hold of medium to heavy weight flexible needles, those are much sturdier to pick up loose seed beads.

My Bead Crochet Project

This bead crochet necklace was crochet using the traditional method. It is made up of a 6-bead row as I prefer a thicker rope. The beautiful seed beads are a mix of Turquoise and Topaz Picasso beads in Size 8/0. They are from Beads & Babble. I used C-Lon Fine cord for the thread and a 1.25mm crochet needle.

The necklace rope can be worn on its own or attached with a pendant. For the pendant, I have embroidered around a turquoise fused glass using different mixes of topaz seed beads (to match the necklace).

The crochet rope will be taught during the class.

Bead Crochet

Bead crochet has never been my favourite technique. The thought of having to string the tiny seed beads onto the thread, what crochet hook size/type/brand to use, what type of thread, the thread size, how to get the beginning rows right, etc. are enough to put me off. This was not until I read about the ‘Crochet Bead Rope Starter Jig’ from StudioDax and decided to try it out.

About the Jig
This patent pending jig is a genius development by Ms. Randi, owner of StudioDax. It is a small wooden block with 5 eye metal pins attached in a circle. Its main function is to stabilise the first few rows of the crochet rope, which is a common challenge for many beaders. It is applicable for Size 11/0, 8/0 and 6/0 seed beads and can function as a 5-bead row or 6-bead row tool.

The jig is accompanied by a detailed and fully illustrated (60 plus close-up photos) manual that explains explicitly on its usage. It also contains useful information on measurements, materials, design variations and steps for a beautiful bangle project.

My Experience
I followed the example in the manual and started with Size 6/0 seed beads. The steps are very easy to comprehend, no tussle, no hassle, the bead rope was crocheted in no time. I also tried with Size 8/0 seed beads and they worked perfectly well with the jig.

I personally think the whole kit is simply brilliant because through the use of the jig, it enlightened me on what I had done wrong previously with the conventional method of bead crochet. The manual is foolproof and I don’t see anyone having difficulties following the steps.

Randi has also been very kind and patient in answering my queries, and giving me valuable information on bead crochet which is compiled under my manual.

Doilies' Colour Choice

(This is for students who are joining the Doilies classes in July & August.)

I understand many of you love the Picasso Turquoise and Dark Red combination of the original Doilies piece. They are still out of stock from my supplier's supplier, thus I am unable to provide them for the class. They will, however, be available for sale later on.

I have come up with 5 different combinations of seed beads. This wouldn't be made possible without the valuable suggestions from some of the students. I have also provided a footnote on each combination which I hope will help you in your selection. Every effort has been made to show the true colour of the images but it may still differ slightly with the actual materials.

As I have limited supplies for the beads, please provide me with your 2 top choices. Please note that the border edging was stitched partially for this viewing. You should try to visualise several pieces of the doilies together when choosing your preferred colour.

Notes - This is a lighter colour combination and for those who like silver. It may look pale to some but the tinge of pink from the Rose Gold beads adds colour to the simple silverish grey piece. If you are planning to make the necklace for a casual wear, this may be a good choice.

Many of you would have known by now that my designs are usually simple and contemporary. This is probably by far my most elaborated necklace piece.

As the name suggests, the inspiration for this necklace comes from the crocheted doilies and the colour combination draws from my wedding cheongsam dress (turquoise dress with large red flowers prints). The seed beads used are the Picasso range, combined with my favourite Supra Gold seed beads. The piece goes very well with a white plain shirt (no collar kind), to bring out the vibrant turquosie and deep red colours.

I have not quite decided if I am going to run a class on this project or pack it into a project kit because of a delay/shortage in the picasso seed beads supply. In any case, I will be offering other colour combinations. I shall keep you posted later.

The Endless Spiral Necklace is a simple, fun and beautiful necklace to create. Using the spiral rope technique, you will learn how to create an opera length necklace without the use of a clasp. The combinations of materials are endless and we have 3 project kits to begin with.

Project Kit - Coral Netted Necklace

This is probably one project that I have done so many pieces. My latest is using Coral Beads with Czech. Picasso Turquoise seed beads.

The Coral beads used in this project are not the Red Meditarranean Corals that have now become endangered species (the Coral Reefs off Italian Coast have now been permanently closed). These corals are Bamboo Corals which are the highest quality dyed corals (the natural colour is generally grey). The dyed beads have a tinge of orange in the redness.

The netted bracelet is stitched with Picasso (appearance of a raku finish) turquoise and opaque seafoam seed beads. It is embellished with the Corals all around and completed with a peyote-stitch clasp.

I have made a bracelet here to show the result of the project but the project kit sold is for a complete necklace. It is probably hard to imagine without seeing the actual piece but I would pair the necklace with a white blouse for a smart casual look. It is for anyone who loves the turquoise/coral combination!

For this project, I have also done something different. I used the 4lb test Fireline thread (double threads) instead of the usual 6lb test because the Czech seed beads have smaller bead holes. The corals are stitched onto the bracelet with Nymo Size D Red as I do not like the smoky grey thread from Fireline to show on the piece.

Who is this kit for?

This kit is for students who have already mastered the Pearly Netted Bracelet or Necklace. It will not include the manual unless you do not have the netted necklace manual.

Pearly Netted Necklace - Antique Brass

I recently completed another netted necklace piece using Swarovski Crystal pearls. For this necklace, I used "heavy" metal seed beads in dark copper and brass and embellished with Antqiue Brass crystal pearls. The final piece is pretty weighty!

I find the Antique Brass quite a unique colour and not a popular choice as far as I know. The reason why I did this combination is because I have this bag of heavy metal seed beads in Brass and thought it will be nice to mix with Brass beads. Personally, I find the heavy metal seed beads quite difficult to work with because of the curved "sharp" edges. The good news however is that they give a very uniform look to the final piece. Overall, I love how the necklace turns out. A good glam accessory to own!

This month, we have some new arrivals at Beads Coffret. They are my latest fetish on Fused Glass Rings! Besides working with my favourite colours, I ventured into some new colour combinations. The rings are attached to adjustable ring bases so one size fits all. Of all, my favourite is the "Sakura Ring" (second from left). I got the inspiration from a home decor article which I read recently that has beautiful pictures of the nature. I think I will try out more of such designs in the near future.

Lilac Gemstones Kit - S$36

These natural Lilac stones have a pale lilac tone on them. Honestly, the first look at the strand itself may be disappointing because the colour looks dull. However, after they were stitched onto the necklace, they give a very natural appeal.

I have used Size 11 Czech Rep. Opaque Purple seed beads for the project. As the bead holes are smaller, stitching with double threads can be quite challenging. I actually broke 4 needles. Thus, for the project kit, the seed beads will be replaced with the permanent galvanised silver seed beads. However, if you like to work with the purple seed beads, let me know and I will put together the materials for you.

Mahogany Obsidian - S$40

The Mahogany Obsidian gemstones are a mixture of brown and black. I have paired them with gold seed beads.

Green Serpentine - S$34

The Green Serpentine gemstones look like olive green. I have paired them with silver seed beads.

My first necklace was made with Amazonite gemstones. They are in sizes from 3mm to 8mm. They are only available with special order only. Each kit costs S$76.

Pearly Netted Necklace

I am still in the "Pearly Netted" frenzy and decided to create a fully embellished necklace. This time round, I used my favourite gemstone, Amazonite beads instead of Swarovski crystal pearls for its unique characteristics. The actual necklce looks more greenish. Another difference is that I created my own clasp to give it a wholesome look. I will try to take a photo of myself wearing it.

Some of the students have feedback to me that the bangle can be quite heavy with the 8mm pearls. If you prefer a more petite look, you may like to consider using 3mm, 4mm and 6mm pearls/beads only.

I have some other gemstones available and plan to pack them into materials kits (manual complimentary). I am currently making samples of them so that you can have a rough idea of how they look. Alternatively, you may also purchase a simple instructional manual at S$6 which includes the clasp making (never been taught by me before). However, you should already have the 'Pearly Netted Bangle' manual as the basic steps will not be repeated.

I will blog again when the kits and manual are ready.

It has been awhile since I list new products at our online bead shop. Please be patient with me as I am juggling a few things at the moment. I hope to get them all up online by early April. You can expect new products, project kits with manuals (Yes, with manual!) and new projects.

I have finished my Pearly Netted Necklace just before writing this blog and can't wait to share with you. Alas, it is raining cats and dogs outside now so I am unable to take photographs of it.

New Project - Brassy Turquoise Ring

Gracing our website cover is my latest project, named Brassy Turquoise Ring. The technique isn't anything fanciful, just the good old Bead Embroidery. Initially, I had intended to make it into a pendant but was too lazy to stitch the accompaying necklace rope, thus turned it into a ring instead.

I stick to only 3 seed bead colours in this project, i.e. Metallic Gold, Chocolate Brown and the new "Heavy Metal" Brass seed beads. I wanted to try the "heavy metal" seed beads and while I like the finish, I find them quite challenging to work with on certain projects because of their big bead hole and curvature. The cabochon is a fused glass in size 1.5" by 1".

I have just ordered some new glass colours and looking forward to create more fused glass rings!

Japanese Book Binding

Yesterday, I attended a private class with Arden of Creative Escape on Japanese Book Binding. At first glance, it seems like a difficult craft to learn but it is quite easy and I had fun creating the book from scratch. Of course, Arden was a wonderful instructor and made the lesson a breeze for me. I am really pleased with how the book turned out. I have lots of scrap fabric and mounting boards from my early days of making framed art, so they can be put to good use now.

I showed my elder son when I came back. This morning, he has monopolised the book and started drawing his favourite planets and stars on it. There goes my very first self-made book.

In April, we are introducing a brand new class on beaded beads, i.e. to BEAD your own BEAD using BEADS! We will be using Peyote Stitch, Right Angle Weave and Netting techniques to create these lovely beaded beads. They can be used as focal beads or string them together to create a unique necklace and the list goes on.

This is an intermediate level class and students have to know at least the basic peyote stitch and right-angle weave.

Pearly Netted Bangle VII - Remedy

If your completed bangle is way too short, it is possible to lengthen the tubular netting on both sides.

To lengthen the front portion, use the beginning thread tail and go through the row of seed beads in a reverse direction until your three main coloured beads come out. Continue your tubular netting from there and end it by adding the main coloured beads back later (as stated in your manual).

Thus it is a good idea to keep a long thread tail from the beginning in case more stitching is needed.

Here's my Sapphire Pearly Netted Bangle. I changed the design slightly for this bangle and had mixed reviews on the piece. Some think it is too bling-bling and chunky while others like it for the same reasons. What do you think?

For students who are interested to create the "Sapphire" bangle and already have the 'Pearlyl Netted Bangle' manual, please follow the instructions as follows:

Start with 2 Part As, followed by 1 Part B, C, D, C, B and A. Subsequent steps would be 1 Part A, B, C, D, C, B and A, continue this sequence till you reach your desired length. Do remember to end with 2 Part As as in the beginning. This bangle will shrink slightly but with the added clasp, it will turn out just nice.

New Stoneware Cabochons for Custom-order

The first set of cabochons are new designs that the artist can make and the second set is pre-existing designs.

Colour : They are available in almost any colour except red will not be true red (looks like pink as in the picture).

Size : The standard size is 35mm but designs which are repetitive can be made into other sizes, e.g. 25mm

Shapes : The standard shape is round but designs which are repetitive can be made into oval or square.

Price : S$12 each (some may differ depending on specifications)

To order : Please state the Code Number, Colour, Size and Shape. If you just state the code number, I assume you want the exact cabochon.

Do consider carefully what you would like to create with the cabochons, especially on the designs. Some may look nice on its own but if you build a bezel around it, it may have a different look.

"Triz" Cuff Accident

Oh, did I not mention my "Triz" cuff met with an accident? Just as I finished the piece, I dropped it onto the floor! The face of the cabochon was fine but two tiny seed beads in the bezel broke and caused a hole in the beadwork. Yes, these tough looking seed beads do break and break at the wrong time. My 3-year old son witnessed the incident and after that kept reminding me, "Mummy, your beads are broken!"

I will be placing the Collar Necklace and "Triz" Cuff at Beads Cage from 20 Feb onwards. In case you spot the imperfection, just know that it is not part of the design.

The "Ruby" and "Emerald" Pearly Netted Bangles will also be displayed at Beads Cage.

March Class I - Collar Necklace

When it comes to bead embroidery, I usually do not think too much and just decide as I bead along. The “Collar Necklace” project centers around the turquoise cabochon which I had used as the focal piece. I bought this cabochon many years ago from Tibet and never got to use it until now. Then, I looked through my pile of cabochons and found some matching turquoise cabochons and coral cabochons for contrast.

I am not exactly a “goldie” person but I stuck to my favourite metallic gold/supra gold/dark gold seed beads to bead embroider the body. I completed the project over a period of time but it wasn’t as tedious or complicated as it looks.

For the ‘Collar Necklace’ class in March, students will learn how to construct the collar necklace from beginning to end. This class is slightly different from previous as it will be more theoretical and I am letting the students to think carefully on the design before embarking on the project, thus only partial materials are provided.

Inspiration from Triz Designs

I first knew about Triz Designs from the Etsy Beadweavers team. I visited the site and was intrigued by the beautiful pieces created by Ms Patricia Tager. She does all kinds of beadweaving works but mainly on bead embroidery. Her signature cuffs are absolutely gorgeous, simple but yet sophisticated.

While planning for my upcoming class on Part III of the 'Art of Bead Embroidery' series, I was thinking about Triz’s embroidered cuffs and thought it would be good if I can introduce them to my students. So, I wrote in to Triz to ask for her permission to allow me to use her design concept. She replied me the next day and said “Yes”!

I started to work on the project eagerly and this is the cuff I created using a stoneware cabochon. To be honest, I am not satisfied with how it turned out. It has the ingredients of Triz’s design, i.e. an embroidered cabochon resting on a metal cuff, but I thought the result is quite different.

Then I worked on my second piece, this time using a smaller glass cabochon and again resting on the metal cuff without any added embroidery work. Again, it didn’t seem right.

I am disappointed for not been able to replicate the captivating look of Triz’s cuffs. It tells me one thing though, i.e. I may be able to copy the design but I can never capture the unique style of the designer.

Anyway, it was a good learning experience. I will still be covering this project (on the techniques, the dos and don’ts) in the upcoming class together with the Collar Necklace project. I am sure my students would do a better job.

Pearly Netted Bangle Part III

This bangle was completed yesterday. I have used the TOHO seed beads instead of Czech Rep. seed beads, so as to see the difference between the two kinds. The challenging part was using 1 colour to do the netting. I had to unpick so many times because the pattern can get quite confusing.

Red is one of my favourite colours and recently I have seen many fine jewellery paired with red ruby stones which look absolutely stunning. The closest I could find from Swarovski crystal pearls range is the crystal Bordeaux, named after the world's leading fine wine region in Southwest France. I mixed it with Dark Red Corals crystals and I think it is a good combination. In my opinion, the photo doesn't do justice to the actual piece as it is unable to capture the richness and sparkle of the stones.

I plan to wear it for my baby's baptism on Sunday, so now I have a good excuse to shop for a matching dress to go with it!

In case, you are planning to make a similar piece in time for Lunar New Year, I am sorry to inform that the seed beads are out of stock! The pearls and crystals were purchased from Beads Cage which also sells a good range of seed beads. I am planning to stitch my next piece in GREEN. I may offer materials kit in this combinations (pearls + crystals). Email me if you are interested.

In February, we will be re-running our tubular bead netting technique class. For those who have missed our previous two classes, here's your chance to sign up!

The 'Pearly Netted Bangle' is in graduated thickness with generous embellishments of Swarovski crystal pearls and round crystals. There are two variations to the design; 1) Embellishments at the centre portion, or 2) Embellishments throughout the bangle. This class project is slightly varied from previous lessons but you will be taught the basics of tubular bead netting.

New Products - Cabochons

I bought these cabochons from a closeout shop in US at great savings. Thus, these cabochons are priced very reasonably.

1) Green 3D "Flower 18x13mm ($1.50 each) - It looks rounder rather than oval and greener in real piece. Carved with floral patterns, the cabochon looks very much like a piece of Chinese jade.

2) Turquoise Oval 20x15mm ($5 each) - These bluish tone (with faint white lines) turquoise cabochons are great for pendant projects. Two of the units are a little more greenish.
